Water is life
The Water is Life expedition “focuses on a ‘science and society’ topic, engaging students in reading compelling informational text about water sustainability, fresh water management, and how to make evidence-based decisions”. (http://commoncoresuccess.elschools.org/curriculum/ela/grade-7/module-4B)
The literacy unit is part of the Engage NY curriculum, called “Water is Life”. The twist is that students will be participating in the F.L.O.W. adventure. http://flowexpedition.blogspot.com/. Students will be continuing their literacy work during the adventures camping on Maine islands.
All students will be completing the three modules, allowing students to write an evidence-based position paper on either industrial or agricultural water management issues.
The book the students will be reading is The Big Thirst by Charles Fishman.
As a final culmination, all students will be presenting a visual component to the water issue that he or she studied at Bath Middle School. Interested stakeholders, experts to the learning, Chewonki, Woolwich 8th graders, and families will be invited. In addition, students will have the opportunity to present their project to other outside organizations. Students will also have a chance to publicize the F.L.O.W. adventure to highlight our trip and thank our sponsors.
