healthy eating around the world
Most students realize the food plays a role in culture and who we are culturally. We need a broader view of the differences and similarities among cultural groups when it comes to food to explain and highlight the uniqueness of all of us. But, can people of different culture obtain a healthy diet from what is culturally-based in the country they live? Are the ingredients for a healthy diet available in the geography and climate around them?
Students will dig deeply to discover how food can become so important to a culture. In some, folklore, myths, and traditions are built around different types of food and how they are grown. Through case studies and readings, students will not only learn these beliefs and traditions, but why some cultural diets seem to be healthier than others. Students will then use their newly discovered information to research a country in a designated region. They will discover the geography, what is grown in that country, and what is the traditions and beliefs in that country related to food.
Students will located a culturally specific recipe and run a nutritional analysis to determine if this recipe could be part of a healthy diet. The recipes will be collected in a house cookbook that will be available to the school and local community. A cultural food sampling night will be held so students can spotlight the recipes they found.
